Expected target count is the single most variable input. A WR1 on a pass-heavy offence sees 8 to 12 targets per game on average. A WR2 sees 5 to 8. A slot receiver sees 6 to 9 in a typical matchup, often more in zone-heavy defensive looks. The standard receiving yards line scales linearly with this — the headline opens at roughly 6 yards per expected target as a baseline, adjusted up or down for the receiver’s depth-of-target profile and the opponent’s defence.

A WR1 who runs deep routes — average target depth of 14+ yards — produces a higher yards line per target than a slot receiver running underneath routes at average target depth of 8 yards. A deep threat with 5 catches and 80 yards looks different from a slot receiver with 8 catches and 70 yards even though both are useful contributions to the offence.
The standard WR1 line sits between 60 and 90 yards in normal matchups. Above 90 is for elite WR1s against weak coverages in high-total games. Below 60 is for either slot specialists, secondary receivers, or WR1s against elite coverage.
Target share and route data: the underlying signals
Target share is the percentage of a team’s pass attempts that go to a specific receiver. It is the most useful single metric for projecting receiving yards because it is more stable week-to-week than raw target count. Raw target count fluctuates with pass attempts; target share normalises for that and reveals the underlying role.
A receiver with a 28% target share on a team that throws 35 times a game gets 10 targets. The same receiver if his team throws 40 times gets 11. The market’s pass-attempt projection drives the absolute target count, but the underlying target share is the more durable signal. A receiver whose target share has been trending up over the last three weeks — from 22% to 28% — is in a different category from a receiver whose target share has been flat, even if the absolute target count has been similar.
Route data is the second layer. Modern player tracking data — distributed publicly by the NFL through Next Gen Stats and through subscription services — includes route counts, route types and separation metrics. A WR who runs 32 routes per game but only sees 6 targets has a high route count and a low target conversion rate, which is a different role than a WR who runs 28 routes and sees 9 targets. The single most useful predictive signal I have found in receiver props is a week-over-week increase in route count combined with a stable or rising target share. That combination usually precedes a breakout receiving game by 1 to 2 weeks, and the market lags it long enough to produce a betting opportunity.
Receptions versus yards: two different markets
UK sportsbooks list both receptions over/under and receiving yards over/under as separate markets on the same receiver. The two markets respond to different inputs and the line shopping value is different between them.
The receptions line is set against a target count and a catch rate. A WR who sees 8 targets at a 65% catch rate produces an expected 5.2 receptions, which would round to a line of 5.5. The line is relatively stable because both target count and catch rate are reasonably stable across the season for established receivers.
The yards line is set against the same inputs plus the yards-per-reception profile, which adds variance. The same 5 receptions can produce 40 yards or 100 yards depending on what kind of catches they were. A receiver who catches a 35-yard go-route and four 8-yard slants produces a 67-yard outcome; a receiver who catches five 8-yard slants produces a 40-yard outcome. The receptions market does not care about this difference; the yards market does.
The implication for line shopping is that the receptions line varies less between books than the yards line, and the value in receiving prop markets sits disproportionately in the yards lines rather than the receptions lines. I tend to bet receptions over rather than yards over when the conviction is on target volume rather than on big-play upside, and yards over when the conviction is on the depth-of-target profile. Tight end props: the special case
Tight end receiving props sit in a different category from wide receiver props for two reasons. First, the position is more bimodal — a true TE1 in a pass-heavy offence can have a WR2-level target share, while a blocking TE in a run-first offence might see 1 to 3 targets per game. The market accounts for this but the variance within the position is high. Second, the routes a TE runs are typically shorter than a WR’s, which compresses the yards line and makes the receptions line proportionally more important.
The receiving yards line for a starting TE typically sits between 35 and 65 yards. The receptions line typically sits between 3.5 and 5.5. The yards line is harder to bet with high conviction because the typical yardage outcome clusters tightly around the mean.
The interesting TE prop spots are the red-zone usage matchups. A TE who has a high red-zone target share against a team that struggles to defend red-zone routes is a strong anytime-TD play, often at prices in the 7/4 to 5/2 range that translate to positive expected value if the underlying matchup analysis is correct. The 30 or so markets per game that UK books offer typically include separate TE yards and TE TD markets, plus the various same-game parlay combinations that link them to other player props. The thin liquidity on standalone TE markets means lines can be slow to move on injury news affecting WRs that would otherwise consume target share, which is a window worth watching on Wednesday and Thursday injury reports.
How receiving lines move during the week
Receiving prop lines move in response to the same weekly injury reporting cycle as quarterback and running back lines, but with additional sensitivity to two specific signals. The first is the opposing cornerback assignment. When a top cornerback is downgraded or ruled out, the line on the receiver he would normally shadow can move 8 to 15 yards within hours. The second is the team’s wide receiver depth chart. When a WR2 or WR3 is ruled out, the WR1’s target share is likely to rise, and his line moves up correspondingly.
The window for value sits primarily in the Wednesday-Thursday gap between when injury news is published and when the market has fully priced. By Friday afternoon, the major moves have happened. By Sunday morning, the lines are at their sharpest.

The receiving prop discipline that actually works
My weekly process on receiving props is simple. Tuesday morning I check the openers against my baseline target-share and route-count model. Wednesday and Thursday I watch the injury reports for changes that affect target distribution — both inside the receiver’s own team and on the opposing defence. Friday I look for the final status confirmations and the cornerback assignments. Saturday I generally do not bet new positions. Sunday morning I check the inactive lists and place selectively.
The biggest mistake I see new UK punters make on receiving props is betting the WR1 of every team in the slate. The temptation is to find a receiver line on every game and bet the over.
