Running back workload and snap counts

The single most useful metric for handicapping rushing yards is snap count. Snap count is the percentage of offensive snaps a player is on the field. A back who runs 18 times for 90 yards with a long of 12 finishes with a great rushing yards line and a losing longest-rush line.

The volatility on longest-rush markets is high. The standard hit rate on the over is roughly 50% by design — the lines are set close to the median — but the variance is large because a 60-yard breakaway can come from a back who is otherwise having a quiet game. I treat longest-rush as a low-conviction supplementary market rather than a primary play.

Anytime touchdown is the highest-volume non-yards rushing prop in the UK market. The price on a starting RB anytime TD is typically 6/4 to 5/2 for a bell-cow on a good offence, lengthening for committee backs and short-yardage specialists. The price reflects the rate at which the back has scored in recent games adjusted for the opposing defence’s red-zone performance.

The interesting anytime TD spots are the goal-line backs who are not the team’s primary rushing threat. A goal-line specialist might get 4 to 6 carries per game but most of them inside the 5-yard line, which produces a touchdown rate substantially higher per carry than his volume suggests. The book’s anytime TD price on these specialist backs is sometimes well off the actual rate, and that mismatch is the cleanest rushing-prop value play I find in most Sunday slates.

The rushing prop discipline I run on game day

My rushing prop process is built around the workload signal first and the game script signal second. Tuesday morning I scan the openers and note any lines that look low against my own snap-count and matchup model. Wednesday and Thursday I watch the injury reports for changes that affect workload distribution. Friday I look for late-breaking backup status changes that push the starter into a higher-volume role. Saturday I generally do not bet new rushing props — the lines have sharpened. Sunday morning I check inactive lists and place a small number of late positions only where the game-day inactive list confirms a workload shift the market has not yet priced.
